Statement on UK Visa Brake Measures
The British Chamber of Commerce Myanmar (BCCM) notes the announcement by the UK Government on 4 March 2026 regarding the introduction of targeted measures, referred to as a “visa brake,” to help protect the integrity of the UK immigration system.
Under these measures, an emergency visa brake will be applied to student visas (sponsored study visas) for Myanmar nationals, which will come into effect on 26 March 2026.
Applications submitted online before the visa brake comes into force will be considered under the Immigration Rules in place at the time of submission. Applicants who hold a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) may continue to submit applications during the period 4 March – 26 March 2026. However, applications made under the sponsored study route after 26 March 2026 will no longer be valid, even if the applicant holds a CAS.
The UK Government has indicated that this is a temporary measure, introduced for Myanmar and three other countries, in response to a high proportion of individuals who have entered the UK on student visas and subsequently claimed asylum.
The visa brake does not affect other visa categories, including those seeking to visit the UK, work in the UK, or apply through other visa routes.
BCCM recognises that this announcement may create uncertainty for students, families, schools and institutions. The Chamber will continue to monitor developments and share updates with members and stakeholders as further information becomes available. Further details are available via official UK Government channels, including GOV.UK ; British Council ; UK in Myanmar , and other communications platforms.
